Over to Emma…

Being a student comes with many budgeting challenges, and one way to manage your budget better and avoid your overdraft is to take up a side hustle.

So what is a side hustle?

A side hustle is something you do on the side of a job or studying to make extra money, and there are so many to choose from.

Cool, so why should I build a side income?

Not only do side hustles mean you can earn extra cash but they also boost your CV which could help you get a job when you graduate.

What side hustles could I do as a college student?

Here are five side hustles that are great for students.

Tutoring

If you have the knowledge and skills then tutoring is a great way to make money as a student. You can do tutoring session in person within the local area, or do online tutoring through Skype. Parents are looking to get their children help with GCSEs, A Levels and even thinks like university entrance exams, which means it can be quite lucrative for you. The downsides are that you will have to stick to a schedule, and finding clients in the first place can be hard. You can advertise on local Facebook groups to find clients.

Reselling

Reselling is where you buy items from a charity shop, car boot sale or elsewhere and sell it on (usually on eBay) for a profit. It has gained massive popularity over the past few years with a massive online community sharing their knowledge for free on social media websites like Instagram and YouTube. The great thing about reselling as a student is that you don’t need to spend much money to get started – you can start from as little as £10. Anything goes, so you could specialise in items you know a lot about, and you can check eBay to see how much they have actually sold for before parting with any cash.

The downsides to reselling as a student are that you can’t grow the business too much if you are struggling for space to store your stock, and you will be expected to post your items to the buyers promptly which can be tough to do when you have essay deadlines or exams.

Freelance writing

Freelance writing is a great side hustle for students because you are used to working towards word counts and deadlines. Freelance writing is where you create articles for someone else – perhaps a company blog or Facebook adverts to sell products. You can find writing opportunities everywhere, from approaching companies directly to websites like People Per Hour. If you create high quality articles that are edited to a high standard then you will soon bring in repeat work and be able to charge more for your work. You can reasonably expect to earn £20 for a 500 word article to start with, increasing your rates as you go.

Mystery shopping

Mystery shopping is a great way to not only make money but also to save money. You will be asked to visit a shop or restaurant as a normal customer and be given a reimbursement to make a purchase or enjoy a meal. You will have a specific assignment to carry out, such as asking a question about an item on the menu or asking a shop assistant for help, and then you will need to complete a report on your findings. This is a great side hustle for students because it means you get to experience new places to eat, and sometimes you are even allowed to take a friend and get their meal reimbursed too. This will help out your tight budget and allow you a few treats along the way. The only downside is the report you have to complete afterward, which can take anything from 15 minutes to an hour to complete.

Dog walking

If you love dogs then dog walking could be one of the student side hustles for you.

Not only do you get to earn some extra cash, but you get to spend time with dogs. The perfect combination. You can find clients by advertising locally in shops or on Facebook, or you could sign up to a dog walking website to match you up with a client. It also saves money on a gym membership because you will be exercising for free.

I hope that these ideas inspire you to find a side hustle to increase your income whilst studying.
